Hotel Shanker – Where every stay becomes a story worth telling
At the turn of the 19th century, Gen. Jit Shumsher Rana, brother of HH Sri Tin Maharaja Bhir Shumsher Jung Bahadur Rana, hired architect Kumar Narsingh Rana to build the most elegant palace in Kathmandu. Items such as gilt mirrors, velvet, marble and sunburst chandeliers were imported from Europe. The exteriors were fashioned in neo-classical style. The construction was completed in 1894 A.D.
Gen. Jit Shumsher died in 1913, and this palace eventually came into the possession of Gen. Maharajkumar Agni Shumsher Jung Bahadur Rana - the son of HH Sri Tin Maharaja Juddha Shumsher Jung Bahadur Rana, one of the most distinguished of the powerful Rana Maharajas. Agni Shumsher's grand-daughters - HM Queen Aishwarya, HM Queen Komal and HH Princess Prekshya, were born in the palace.
In 1964 A.D., Late Mr. Ram Shanker Shrestha envisioned transforming a historic Rana palace into a hotel that preserved its timeless charm while offering modern comforts. Starting with just 23 rooms, he laid the foundation for what is now celebrated as one of the best heritage hotels in Kathmandu Valley.
Today, as Hotel Shanker, Kathmandu, marks its 60th year, it continues to uphold its legacy as a symbol of elegance and hospitality. The palace stands proud in Lazimpat, a prime location near Thamel and Durbar Marg, offering guests a unique combination of history and luxury.
Late Mr. Shrestha’s outstanding contribution to Nepal’s tourism and hospitality industry was recognized with the prestigious Order of the Gorkha Dakshina Bahu, one of Nepal’s highest honors for distinguished service to the nation. His vision of blending historical beauty with modern-day amenities remains the cornerstone of Hotel Shanker’s success.

Nestled within the historic Kathmandu Durbar Square, the Taleju Temple stands as a testament to Nepal’s rich tapestry of history, spirituality, and architectural brilliance. Dedicated to Taleju Bhawani, the royal goddess of the Malla dynasty, this 16th-century edifice is not just a place of worship but a symbol of the nation’s enduring cultural heritage.
In the heart of a city known for its vibrant streets and bustling markets, there’s a quieter side to life, a place where time slows down and the air feels a little lighter. At Hotel Shanker, the pool is more than just a place to swim. It’s a space to pause, reflect, and find a little calm in the middle of it all.
Step into the Durbar Squares of Patan, Bhaktapur, or Kathmandu, and you are no longer just in a historic city. You’re inside a living Tantric body. Where shrines rise not just at the center, but at every turn, every step, every breath. These cities were not built with symmetry alone, they were built with intention. And their intention is to awaken.
